The traditional Spring launch event was hosted by The Master of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals Ian Mayes QC, Alderman and Sheriff William Russell and Alderman and Sheriff Peter Estlin. Other distinguished attendees included the Chief of the Royal Air Force Police and the Chair of the London Ambulance Service. The event also saw Charles Henty, Under-Sheriff and Secondary of London, bestowed with the honour of becoming Freeman of the Company.
The Company and Sheriffs are now accepting nominations for the accolade, which will be awarded in the Autumn. Last year, the City of London Sheriffs’ Award for Bravery was presented to Dr. Matthew Smith who also attended the recent launch to help promote the campaign. Dr. Smith received the honour for his role in preventing a fatality following the Leytonstone stabbing incident and for “courageously and selflessly” remaining with the victim throughout the attack.
The Sheriffs’ Award, was introduced shortly after the 2007 London tube and bus bombings, to recognise outstanding acts of bravery by individuals from across the UK. Every year since then, the Sheriffs have sought nominations for members of the public who have, without thought for their own safety, acted to confront danger in a selfless and inspirational way.
The awardee’s name will be inscribed on an Honours Board and placed in a Book of Honour, which are both on permanent display within the Central Criminal Court, The Old Bailey. This award is open to nominations from the general public, the business community, emergency services and the armed forces.
