Nick Buckles, the likeable Chief Executive of G4S, was forced to withstand an onslaught from the Parliamentary Standards Sub-Committee on the issue of the shortfall of G4S contract security staff at the London 2012 Olympics. The Committee, who appeared not to have the faintest idea how such a major short term contract operates, appeared to satisfy their vanity by hurling insults at Mr Buckles; it is to his immense credit that he did not rise to the bait, although the temptation must have been great.

More than 400 door supervisors were inspected during a London borough-wide operation on Friday [29 June].

There are  reputed to be approximately 2000 contract manned guarding companies in the United Kingdom and of these, there are some 730 which have voluntarily signed up to the SIA’s Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS).  Arguably there are only two, perhaps three, which do not need to do active marketing to promote their services and I refer to G4S, Securitas and MITIE. They have arrived and their very name is a marketing tool within itself.  There are others who are not quite yet household names, such as VSG, OCS, Wilson James, The Corps and Carlisle, who will realise that they still have to pursue new business with an active marketing strategy promoting their services.

Established in 1947, this family run company is the latest to join the ACS Pacesetters.  The company is currently being managed by Charlotte Thompson, the granddaughter of the founder, and her father, Peter Townsley, who is the Chairman.
